I never dare to say this to anyone but I find no appeal in 99% of female characters in dgr. I tried to like them or look for something interesting in them but it’s pretty clear that Kodaka gives no fucks about writing them properly (like most creators tbh). They’re all always smart, cute and on-point in any situation and I feel like they put the standard so high for girls that not only does it make it impossible for me to relate to them, but it borderline makes me uncomfortable and not want to discuss them. I know it’s weird to say it like this but I wonder how many female fans feel the same way. The only well-made female character was Seiko who had a history of psychological abuse (and maybe Mikan or Miu for other reasons); she acted awkward and disorganized in most situations, not flawless and perfect, and her snapping at people was actually realistic. She isn’t always cute, in fact she’s not afraid to look and act in ugly ways (with her transformation drug) and feels very human in contrast to female characters who just had a classic childhood-with-bad-external-circumstances backstory that’s made out to be the tragic tale of a girl who’s a sweet maiden underneath (coughmakiharukawacough). The issue with Chiaki is the same, it’s very easy to stan her if you only care about aesthetics or just want to fuck her, but if you know she’s someone you’re supposed to *relate to* as a female fan, it’s annoying. What the anti-Chiaki part of the fandom means by ‘flaws’ is something that’s *actually bad*, in the sense that it can’t be made out to be adorable and quirky. You can take any of Chiaki’s flaws (being an airhead, falling asleep, naïveté, etc.) and go like ‘awww how sweet’, but you can’t say that about Seiko turning into a monster and going on a rampage. Maki is the most paradoxical from this viewpoint because she did some terrible and irrational shit and it could’ve been interesting if left like that, but instead the narrative chose to push it down our throats that even THAT is tragically beautiful or empowering in some way and that’s the most annoying thing about her. Female characters in dgr are mostly a bland-ass excuse for aesthetics and seeing people overanalyze them just makes me go like 'how do you care so much’
CAN’T SAY I DISAGREE HONESTLY
