Okay.
I am so sick of the “stop giving Jaune focus” bullshit. For one, this character IS A MAIN CHARACTER. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS? It means they get character development, and are relevant to the plot. OF WHICH JAUNE IS BOTH.
Additionally, let’s tally up percent of showtime devoted to Jaune’s character development. I am counting whole EPISODES, not just screentime. This counts individual MOMENTS as ENTIRE EPISODES in counting terms, so I am lending myself as generously to the anti-Jaune argument as possible.
EPISODES WHERE JAUNE GETS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT (at least, at this point in the series):
The Shining Beacon
The First Step
Jaunedice (Pt 1)
Jaunedice (Pt 2)
Forever Fall (Pt 1)
Forever Fall (Pt 2)
Extracurricular
Burning the Candle
Dance Dance Infiltration
Destiny
End of the Beginning
The Next Step
A Much Needed Talk
Kuroyuri
Welcome to Haven
The More the Merrier
Once again, I credit these ENTIRE EPISODES for even one moment of showing Jaune’s character in a way we haven’t seen before, further nuancing him. This list shows two important pieces of information: If you count parts one and two of Jaunedice and Forever Fall as one episode, the most character development scenes Jaune ever gets in a Volume is only ever shown in four episodes, tops. That means LESS THAN 25% OF VOLUME TWO was spent developing Jaune, the most criticized volume for giving Jaune screentime.
So, if we include trailers and character shorts, the entire EPISODES that feature moments or scenes that develop Jaune only take up 22.5 PERCENT of the show’s total story screentime. Those are less episodes than the number of World of Remnants and Volume Trailers combined. For even MORE perspective, we surpass the number of episodes Jaune develops where BLAKE develops before we even REACH Volume Four episodes, and HER character development occurs over 35.2% of the show’s current runtime. Yes, Blake Belladonna, the character we always complained didn’t have enough focus in the show, has MORE INSTANCES OF CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT than the other significant main character, Jaune, who gets criticized for taking up “too much” of the show’s runtime.
In conclusion: Jaune is a main character. Treat him like one, and suddenly complaining that he gets too much screentime just… disappears. It’s a weak argument if you KNOW WHAT CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IS.
Sorry for all the caps. I’m just really, really tired.
